Valentine’s Day can leave anyone who is not in a relationship feeling a little left out, like you were the only one not invited to a great party. And if you’re going through a break up or divorce, Valentine’s Day can stir up painful memories and feelings.
It’s understandable to feel negative about Valentine’s Day if “single” isn’t your relationship status of choice. If you are dreading this coupled holiday, here are a few ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day your own way.
1. Give yourself a gift.
Think about how much you would spend on a significant other for Valentine’s Day. Then take that money and spend it on yourself. Maybe go to a spa? Or how about a new iPhone? Or maybe a new book? The possibilities are as endless as your own budget and imagination. You deserve it!
2. Give a friend a gift.
If you have other single friends, there’s a pretty good chance that at least one of them is feeling the way you are about Valentine’s Day. You could cheer them up with a friendly card or Valentine’s chocolates or flowers.
3. Be the Valentine to a worthy cause.
Pick a charity and make a donation. It’s that simple and you’ll feel really good about yourself. And you could take it one step further and volunteer, which will get you out of the house but away from all those cozy couples.
4. Be a kid again.
Do you remember those fun Valentine’s you gave and received in grade school? They’re still around and you could send some to your friends and family. Or you could get creative and craft your own.
5. Reconnect with an old friend or family member.
And I’m not talking about checking their facebook status. I mean, really reach out to them and make a phone call or invite them to lunch to see how they are doing. You’ll be happy you did.
